Why write?

Aviva speaks at Community College of Philadelphia to encourage students to become English majors and cherish the almighty word.

Why?

Because writing helps us clarify our thoughts.

Because putting one’s thoughts on paper — or on the screen — breathes life and power into the words. It packs a punch.

You may need to write an essay for financial aid, a critique of your teacher or doctor’s office, or draft a recommendation letter about yourself and email it to a supervisor asking them to please sign.

Writing pushes the ball forward.

Writing shows you are serious.

Writing can illustrate your passion.

When it feels like your friends and family have turned away, the pen and paper are waiting for you. They hold no judgement. They are just waiting for you to fill them up and share your darkest secrets. And the keyboard will not tell, unless you tell it to.

Love yourself, love your mind, learn to write well, and use the skills for the rest of your life.
